You may have heard recently of Girls Rock Camp recreating iconic album covers as part of their end-of-year grant drive. Part of  a wonderful initiative dedicated to providing young girls a fun, supportive and accessible environment to learn about music, Girls Rock Camp exists with the goal of empowering young women.

The first Girls Rock Camp, Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp 4 Girls, was hosted in Oregon, USA as a summer day camp in 2001. Since then, over 50 camps have been started worldwide, and now Australia will host it’s first ever; Girls Rock! Canberra.

Open to self-identified girls, trans and gender non-conforming youth aged 10-17, the five day camp will take place January 11th to Friday 15th at the Ainslie Art Centre, Canberra, providing attendants with a week-long mentorship program that aims to encourage self-expression, creativity and teamwork through music. Campers will learn an instrument, form a band, watch live music performances and participate in creative workshops such as zine making and screen printing. They will also write an original song to be performed at the Showcase at the end of the week.

With the likes of Courtney Barnett and Jen Cloher already announced as mentors for Girls Rock! Canberra, this event will be a great opportunity to let young women explore their own creativity and confidence through music.

Campers can now apply to attend with applications closing on November 22nd. There are also great opportunities to volunteer either in direct mentorship roles (such as instrument instructor, band manager, etc) or indirect roles (roadies, support crew, etc).
